Big Energy Saving Week

Big Energy Saving Week is a week-long annual campaign aimed at raising awareness and aims to help people save money and energy by making their homes more efficient and switching to the best energy deal. Energy Saving Week runs from 17th to 23rd January. This will be the 8th Energy Saving Week campaign!

The event was created in partnership with Citizen’s Advice, the Energy Saving Trust and the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Many other organisations and charities often support the campaign, too.

With energy bills at an all-time high, knowing how to save energy has never mattered more as the UK faces an energy crisis that has led to soaring bills and supplier failures. Many households are struggling to afford their energy costs, and some are at risk of fuel poverty. By following some simple tips, you can reduce your energy consumption, lower your carbon footprint, and save money on your bills.

Here are some of the things you can do during Big Energy Saving Week and beyond:

  • Check Your Energy Bills: Review your energy bills to understand your consumption and identify potential areas for savings.
  • Seek Energy Advice: Reach out to local energy advice services or online resources for tips on reducing energy waste and improving energy efficiency.
  • Upgrade Home Insulation: Explore options for better insulation, such as adding insulation to your attic, walls, or floors to keep your home warmer and reduce heating costs.
  • Switch Energy Suppliers: Consider switching to an energy supplier that offers better rates or renewable energy options to lower your energy bills.
  • Access Financial Support: Check if you are eligible for government grants or financial assistance programs to help with energy bills, especially if you are on a low income.
  • Spread the Word: Share energy-saving tips and information with friends and family to help them save money on their energy bills too.

By taking part in Big Energy Saving Week, you can make a positive difference for yourself, your community, and the planet.

Here are five winter warmer tips:

  1.  Switch your heating off when leaving the house for a few hours. It’s cheaper to reheat your home than keep your heating on low when you’re out, unless you own a heat pump.
  2. Turn down your thermostat by 1°C and save around £105 a year on energy bills. But to keep comfortable and stay safe we recommend staying above 18°C.
  3. Fit draught-proofing strips to your windows and doors and save around £45 a year. This can be a quick DIY job. Keeping extra heat in your home will leave you feeling warmer and more comfortable.
  4. Get a hot water cylinder jacket and save roughly £50 a year on energy bills. Jackets are easy to fit, typically cost under £30, and you’ll also spend less on a hot shower or bath in the future.
  5. Keep furniture away from radiators and heaters to feel warmer at home. Don’t overwork your system by blocking your source of heat and remember to remove radiator covers to get more value for money.
