idverde is proud to have supported Colchester Borough Council’s ‘Trees for Years’ initiative for another year. It returned in February for the 15th year, offering free trees to local residents of Colchester to promote wildlife in gardens and support the Colchester Woodland and Biodiversity project.
The biodiversity project aims to help residents and businesses make informed decisions about their impact on the environment in Colchester and conserve and enhance biodiversity.
The annual event was originally postponed in 2021 due to Covid but returned with a new click and collect system this year.
The new approach made it easier for residents to collect closer to their homes and reduce crowds, with a choice of five pick up locations and a range of timeslots to choose from.
There was a total of 15,000 free trees up for grabs including species of native trees, shrubs and fruit bushes which will add value to the local wildlife. Species included: silver birch, holly, hazel, beech and red stem dogwood. All trees were bare-root and ranged in height from 50cm to 1.2m.
Additional to the trees, a variety of shrubs were available to residents that didn’t have the space for a tree in their garden. Shrubs are extremely beneficial, providing food and shelter for birds, with berry bearing shrubs providing a source of food through the winter months when supplies run low.
Cllr Simon Crow, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, added: ‘A big thank you to idverde for their continued support and sponsorship of this inspiring initiative, which gives residents a chance to help create a greener borough. We’re delighted to be able to run the event this year, after last year’s event had to be postponed due to Covid restrictions. We hope the new way of registering for and collecting trees will make this initiative even more accessible to residents across the borough.‘
