How to spring clean your community

Today marks the start of the Great British Spring Clean, the perfect time to freshen up your home and your neighbourhood. Whether you want to join a local litter picking group, organise a community clean up event, or simply do your part to keep your street tidy, here are some tips to help you spring clean your community.

Plan ahead

Before you start litter picking, make sure you have the right equipment and supplies. You will need gloves, bags, litter pickers, and a high-vis vest. You may also want to bring some water and snacks. Check the weather forecast and dress appropriately. If you are organising a group event, make sure you have enough volunteers, equipment, and a designated meeting point and time.

Be safe

Safety is important when litter picking in your community. Always wear gloves and avoid touching sharp or hazardous items. If you find any needles, broken glass, or other dangerous objects, do not pick them up. Instead, make a note of the area/photograph it, and report it to the local council or the police. Do not enter private property or trespass on restricted areas. Stay on public paths and roads and be aware of traffic. If you are with others, keep an eye out for each other.

Be green

Litter picking in your community is a great way to help the environment, but you can also make it more eco-friendly by separating the rubbish into recyclable and non-recyclable items and dispose of them in the appropriate bins. And if you find any unwanted items that are still in good condition, consider donating them to a charity shop or a local organisation.

Have fun

Clearing your community of litter can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. You can make it more fun by inviting your friends, family, or neighbours to join you. You can also turn it into a game or a challenge by setting a goal, keeping track of your progress, or rewarding yourself with a treat. You can also use the opportunity to meet new people, learn more about your area, and discover new places. Being with your community can also boost your mood, improve your health, and make you feel proud of your contribution.

Spread the word

One of the best ways to spring clean your community is to inspire others to do the same. You can spread the word by sharing your story, photos, or videos on social media, using hashtags like #GreatBritishSpringClean or #KeepBritainTidy. You can also contact your local newspaper or magazine. You can also encourage your friends, family, or colleagues to join you next time or start their own clean-up projects. By spreading the word, you can raise awareness, create a positive impact, and make a difference.

Litter remains a big problem across the country; not only is it unsightly, but it devalues local areas, pollutes the environment, causes harm to residents and wildlife, and is expensive to remove.
