International Women’s Day | Julie Lynch
Julie Lynch is a Contracts Manager, leading the team on our West Somerset cleansing contract
How long have you worked in this industry and why did you decide on this career?
The career is very interesting. Every day is different, learning new procedures all the time. Since joining idverde I have become more involved with local community sustainability projects. Being able to donate and support the local community has been great, it makes the street cleansing more and more interesting. Having a great team and building new ways to make all our jobs interesting is why I continue to enjoy my job.I have been with the waste sector for 18 years, and four years with idverde. I started off as a receptionist and progressed up to manager.
What’s a typical day like for you?
My supervisor, administrator, and I start the day with a brief on the works for the week and all the monthly tasks, and catch up on emails and phone calls. I carry out site inspections for the area I cover across Somerset West. There are also opportunities to promote biodiversity.
I try to finish the day with a swim to relax.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I can promote the company I work for un my local community and get people involved, making them aware that our job does make a difference – we are part of the community.
Do you feel there are any particular challenges or misconceptions relating to women working in your particular job?
I do sometimes feel there are not enough women in street cleansing. I have one lady who I encouraged to take the job in her village and who has been with me for two years now. She is the only street cleansing female we have had, so maybe we need a new approach to the job to make it inviting to all genders.
Why would you recommend a similar career to other women?
It can be very rewarding. You can have the office but also work within your environment and be part of the community. I’m also really fortunate to have Exmoor as my surroundings.
