idverde and Warwickshire College: A Partnership for Real-Time Work Experience

The Warwick team has been having exciting conversations with Warwickshire College on valuable ways to provide their students with additional needs on ways to equip them with new skills from hands-on, real-time work experience.

This endeavour continued the collaboration with WCG after our first successful work experience event with the SEND students. You can learn more here.

The department within the Warwickshire College Group caters to 16 to 25 year olds, with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The department’s purpose is to equip students with a comprehensive education, arming them with essential life skills, workplace proficiencies, self-assurance, and the ability to navigate employment opportunities as they transition into independent adulthood.

They extend support and opportunities to help each student realise their full potential, regardless of their nature. This might involve securing and maintaining a low-skilled job for some, while others may pursue advanced apprenticeships. The diversity of abilities among their students is vast and unique.

The day’s work experience included activities that took place in Victoria Park, one of the premier parks in Leamington Spa. The aim was to carry out cleansing operations in high-profile areas of the park.

Such activities included cleaning the very echoey tunnel that goes under the road between the park, the steps leading down to the famous Spa pump rooms, and cleansed steps down to the renowned Spa pump rooms and the bridge over River Leam.

Each student took turns using various tools such as brooms, scrapers, shovels, and hoes. After lunch, the day was concluded by cleaning the steps in Jephson Gardens, a fantastic Green Flag park.

The entire day was highly productive, and all the college staff did a fantastic job. The students discovered street cleansing involves numerous elements and is not just about picking up litter that goes into making our public spaces look aesthetic.

Members of the public also commented on the excellent job the group was doing.

idverde is committed to further projects in the future; starting with work experience, with a view to then moving to supported internships.

All in all, it is great to be building a partnership with the college, supporting the students in their development, introducing them to the nature of our work, and perhaps one day leading to future employment in enhancing our treasured green spaces for residents, wildlife and all that use them.

This partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration and its potential impact on young people’s future lives.
