Brickhill Country Park is part of a consortium housing development located north of Brickhill, Bedford. The long-term project aimed to recreate a country park to welcome a new housing estate. Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon wanted to introduce sports facilities, play areas and 30+ hectares of parkland to the development.

Our Role

idverde was chosen to support the venture having proven experience in providing multi-service projects of this size. Using their expertise and knowledge of delivering similar schemes, they were able to offer cost savings by value engineering the scope of works. idverde was heavily involved in the design and planning process, providing technical support throughout the project, ensuring both the quality of the end product and financial viability.

Scope of Work

Consultancy:

Design meetings, site meetings and public open days allowed TCL to work closely with the developers, Bedford Borough Council and the local community to agree the works.

Play Areas and Soft Surfacing:

  • Design, planning and installation of 9 play areas,
    including 7 LAPs, 1 NEAP and 1 main LEAP
    area
  • Supply and installation of 90 play equipment products,
    including 6 hardwood timber sculptures and 4
    timber play jumping discs
  • 2000m2 of soft surfacing including eco grassmatting,
    woodchip safety surfacing and mounding

Planting:

  • Installation of 20 ornamental trees
  • 310 linear metres of native hedge planting
  • 600m2 of screen shrub planting
  • Planting on 30+ hectares of parkland, including
    wildflower and grassland
  • Excavation for habitat corridors

Fencing and Street Furniture:

  • 600m2 of fencing
  • 9 self-closing gates
  • Street furniture including 13 eco-bins and 17 greenlea
    seats

Sports pitches and Turf:

  • Installation of 900m2 of Turf
  • 1 junior sports pitch
  • 2 adult sports pitches

Hard Surfacing:

  • All site preparations including excavation
  • 350m2 of graphite block paving footpaths
  • 370m2 of hard surfacing

Approach & Results

idverde provided a wide range of services including landscaping, play installation, fencing and surfacing. Using a directly employed team of experts, we delivered a cost-effective, client-focused service for our trusted long-term partners.

Community involvement was initiated by two planting days where local families were included in supervised tree planting around the country park.

The site contributed to the Borough of Bedford Green Space Strategy; the council’s vision for all public open spaces to provide environmental, economic and community benefits to its residents.

idverde delivered the ecological initiatives of the project by preserving plant diversity and habitat. Play areas were installed to reflect the natural landscape of the surrounding parkland by using materials such as robinia wood.
