Background

SANGS stands for ‘Suitable Accessible Natural Greenspace’, an area of natural importance that accompanies a new Taylor Wimpey housing development south-west of London. Originally former army barracks in the second world war, the 400-acre
public site aims to provide a secure, environmentally-friendly public area that offers a contrast to its nearby capital city.

Approach & Results

idverde worked with the ecologists to help design a management plan to provide savings to the developer. The scope of works increased resulting in pressure on the budget. To ensure the project was delivered within budget, idverde redesigned and value engineered aspects of the project.

idverde also offered cost savings to the client by sourcing all the materials through their own supplier and using their own in-house services.

To address the community’s concerns of losing the site’s historic value of WWll barracks, idverde was granted permission preserve aspects of the sentimental landscape, restoring the old pill boxes back to life.

A community day was organised for the children of the local school to place time capsules in the restored pill boxes before gating them off to restrict public access. Each of the children were allocated a durable ex-military ammunition container filled with items of their choice such as underground maps and school timetables.

idverde provided inclusive allotments for all abilities, constructing raised beds for disabled holders. A water system was also installed to allow the avid vegetable growers to fill their watering cans, thus creating a space for the local community.

The Crookham Park seeks to reduce recreational pressures on existing nature conservational areas, particularly those that are vulnerable to recreational disturbance. idverde preserved a wide range of habitats and associated species, creating new habitats in the form of specially constructed logs and branches, providing shelter for reptiles and insects.
